As part of its commitment to supporting and strengthening its position towards education in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, the UAE Space Agency launched the Space Rocket competition at the Dubai Airshow 2015. The launch was witnessed by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.
The competition, organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Abu Dhabi Education Council, sought to generate interest among the students by engaging them in awareness activities that focus on the space sector.
Students were asked to color a space shuttle on a background of their choosing, and submit their work to a judging panel, which selected the top 44 designs from around 250 schools.
Winning schools were awarded a 2x2 meter model of the space shuttle, for students to apply their winning design on.
The winning designs were showcased during a special exhibition held at Manarat Al Saadiyat in Abu Dhabi. The exhibition was visited by H.E. Hussain Al Hammadi, Minister of Education; HE Dr. Khalifa Al Romaithi, Chairman of the UAE Space Agency; H.E. Dr. Mugheer Al Khaili, Director General at the Abu Dhabi Education Council; H.E. Mr. Mohammed Salem Al Dhaheri, Executive Director of School Operations at the Abu Dhabi Education Council.
