As part of its strategy to stimulate interest in space science and technology, the UAE Space Agency has selected nine Emirati students from among 141 applicants representing more than 12 universities to participate in the Space Exploration Research Experience (SERE) programme, part of the Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt (EMA). The initiative offers undergraduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines an invaluable opportunity to enhance their research skills while actively contributing to the mission.
Mohsen Al Awadhi, Director of the Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt, said:
“The programme is a pioneering step in the UAE Space Agency’s efforts to develop the capabilities of local talent in space sciences and technologies. It provides undergraduates with the opportunity to work on specialised research projects within an international team of experts and mentors.”
Al Awadhi added: “SERE encompasses a wide range of research areas, including space data analysis, thermophysical modelling, and software development for EMA missions, as well as advanced simulations of asteroid landing missions. This gives students pioneering scientific and practical experience, enhancing their readiness to continue their journey of innovation and excellence in the space sector.”
The programme generated significant interest among Emirati students, attracting 141 applicants since registration opened. Female students accounted for 77% of applications, compared with 23% from male students. Applicants came from a variety of undergraduate levels, reflecting the programme’s role in offering a unique opportunity to participate in advanced space research.
Khalifa University led applications with 54, followed by UAE University with 23, and the Higher Colleges of Technology with 18. Additional applications were submitted by students from the Emirates Aviation University, the American University of Sharjah, the University of Sharjah, as well as international institutions.
Training will take place across a number of leading national and international research centres, including the Institute for Space Astrophysics and Planetology in Rome, Italy; the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics in Boulder, Colorado; and the Technology Innovation Institute in Abu Dhabi. These environments will allow participants to apply their research in diverse, cutting-edge settings that nurture their skills.
The programme provides participants with a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience, enabling them to engage with advanced technologies while strengthening their critical thinking and innovation skills. It also reflects the UAE’s commitment to cultivating a stimulating educational and research ecosystem, where students interact with leading local and international experts, fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration.
The UAE Space Agency and the National Space Academy continue to develop a wide range of initiatives, training programmes, and workshops designed to build national capabilities and strengthen skillsets. By combining scientific research with practical application, both institutions are committed to ensuring the sustainability and advancement of the UAE’s space sector.
